Continuing education and certification

Continuing education and certification

October 09, 2018

Continuing education and certification of your bicycle mechanic is very important for your safety and sanity. You have a lot riding on your bike both literally and figuratively. Your bicycle is an investment whether riding for pure pleasure, competition or necessity.

Interbike, the international trade show for bicycles, recently happened. Assessment testing of the attendees was conducted.  We’ve attached a couple of quotes from the Professional Bicycle Mechanics Association.

“Since this was the first time doing so, my colleagues and I had a long, continuous discussion about the certification process while we were going through it, as we assessed mechanics from all over the country (and some from far-flung countries!). As we began failing about half of the mechanics who had come through the first day (and that statistic remained throughout, to the last day), we questioned ourselves and wondered, "is this test too hard? is it Level One?". Being that I essentially wrote the test (with an enormous amount of gratitude for the assistance from Matt Eames at United Bicycle Institute), I of course, take the concerns to heart.”

“After much hashing out of our thoughts, our answer stands at a firm "no", we do not believe the test is too hard.”

The Mechanics Association wanted to make sure they were doing their job by informing the membership.  Any legitimate bicycle establishment should want their mechanics to be certified so proper technique and quality control is consistently utilized.

We at Shots and Sprockets are all certified mechanics through the program at United Bicycle Institute. We also are firm believers in keeping current with the latest trends and options on bicycles. UBI offers not only classes for complete shop operation but also for frame building as well as wheel building.

You as a rider need to feel comfortable and believe in the ability of your mechanic that they can perform the work you need. You also need to be able to talk to your mechanic, and express what you want/need from us. We know it can be a bit overwhelming, and we do our absolute best to speak plainly and to the point. Your safety and comfort are our biggest concerns.  Whether you decide to go with us or another certified mechanic, your safety and sanity is what we value for you as the customer.

So call us, email or even text us so we can help you stay safe and sane on the road!  We are here to help you enjoy the ride and keep your investment in tip top shape!!

We are heading into the home stretch of summer. The days are slowly getting shorter and kids are getting ready to back to school. I’m enjoying sunrises while sipping coffee before the house wakes up. This is my favorite time of year!
